Jenkinson was born in Ireland, settled in the United States and
was actively involved in military affairs.  He served as a
private in Thomas L. Martin’s Company C, First Regiment of New
Jersey Militia in 1861 and later joined Company B of the 12th
Regiment of the United States’ Infantry.  Jenkinson’s papers
show that he was severely wounded in the Battle of Wilderness,
May 5, 1864.  While the collection is mainly comprised of
military papers, it also includes citizenship papers, bank books,
and a 1904 roster of the Grand Army of the Republic Lincoln Post,
no. 11.  After the war, Jenkinson became involved with the
State of New Jersey National Guard.
