Biographical Note
Amzi Dodd was born in Bloomfield, New Jersey in 1793. He was the son of United States Army General John Dodd. After spending his childhood in Bloomfield, he attended the College of New Jersey in Princeton, graduating with honors in 1813. He then read law in the office of Joseph C. Hornblower, and advanced to the bar in 1817.
Dodd moved to Newark and set up a legal practice there, and he experienced immediate success. As his reputation grew, he was appointed Prosecutor of the Pleas for Essex County and served as the representative from Essex County to the state General Assembly, 1826-1827, and the state Senate in 1823. He was also very active in the Essex Brigade of Militia, from 1810-1823, and served as its Judge Advocate.
His promising legal and political career was cut short by a severe illness, and Amzi Dodd died at the age of forty-five March 19, 1838. His nephew and namesake Amzi, born in 1823, had a long and distinguished career as Vice Chancellor of the State of New Jersey, and also as president of the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company of Newark.
