Kept by the daughter of Reverend Ira Condict, late pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church
at New Brunswick, New Jersey. The diary covers January-September 1815. Miss Condict
died at age seventeen on October 22, 1815.
Ruth W. Condict, the daughter of Sarah Perine and the Reverend Ira Condict (1764-1811)
of New Brunswick, New Jersey, was born in 1798. Her father was the vice president of
Old Queens College at New Brunswick (now Rutgers University) and a trustee at his alma
mater, the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University). Ruth died on October 22,
1815 at the age of seventeen.
The donor is unknown at this time.
The Ruth W. Condict Diary consists of two folders, one containing her diary from the
year 1815, and the other containing a typed transcript. Entries include reflections
on life and on local and national events, and illustrate the concerns of a young woman
in early 19th century New Jersey. The last entry is dated September 26,
1815 and makes no allusions to ill health, although Ruth died less than one month
later.
