Papers, 1844-1934, of the Howe family of Passaic, N.J. (Passaic County), including Rev. John Moffat Howe (1806-1885) and his two sons.
Rev. Howe was a dentist, physician, hospital chaplain, and a founder of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Passaic. George Rowland Howe (1847-1917), a jewelry manufacturing executive with Carter, Sloan & Co. (later, Carter, Howe & Co.) in New York and Newark, was active in Newark’s Y.M.C.A., the Board of Education, and the Methodist church in East Orange, N.J. (Essex County). Dr. Charles Moffat Howe (1851-1920), a dentist
who established the first dental office in Passaic, was  also active as mayor of Passaic for four terms, president of the
Passaic National Bank, president of the Y.M.C.A, and other civic organizations. Collection includes: diaries, photographs, land deeds,
indentures, estate and tax papers, correspondence and business brochures. Of interest: the New York College of Dentistry
valedictorian speech delivered by Dr. Charles M. Howe (1873); a religious journal (1844) kept by Dr. John M. Howe, including
outlines of sermons heard while he studied medicine at Castleton Medical College (Vermont); and ledgers of the Howe Paper Tube Company (1895-1919).

Bulk of papers include genealogical materials collected by George R. Howe for John M. Reid’s Filial Tribute to the Memory of Rev. John Moffat Howe(n.p., 1889). Included are letters of instruction and other military papers of Major Bezaleel Howe (1750-1825), who served during the Revolution as George Washington’s bodyguard. Other family genealogies include: Jenkins, Bernard, Moffat, Barber, Rowland, Houghton, and Kip.
George R. Howe’s papers include diaries, appointment books, and a long correspondence with his son, Herbert Barber Howe
(1882-1957), and his wife, Louisa Barber Howe (1854-1934). Also, business brochures including a catalog of silverware, jewelry and
watches, and a photograph album based on the life of  Louisa B. Howe.

Gift of Mrs. Nelson McGeary from the estate of Herbert Barber Howe.
