Scope and Content Note:

This collection consists of a journal kept by George Perry Mason from January 1905 until December 1906 concerning the Congregational protest against the solicitation of $100,000 from John D. Rockefeller by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions of the Congregational Church.  Mason also used the journal as a scrapbook, pasting articles about Rockefeller and about this “tainted money” issue into the book.  By the end of 1906 the American Board decided that while it would accept the money Rockefeller had already agreed to donate, the Board would never again upset the members of the Congregation by soliciting donations from businessmen who may be involved in “business immorality.”  In the journal Mason documents the response to the solicitation and acceptance of Rockefeller’s money, and the methods of protest.  He also writes critically of Rockefeller.
