Scrapbook, 1835, 0.1 linear feet / 1 volume
Call Number: MG 517

Summary

Summary:

Includes handwritten copies of ten of the first twelve issues of the Burlington Starry Journal (February- October 1835), and one copy of La Pileine Lune or the Mysterious Visitor (April 1835). These two weekly newspapers contain both poetry and prose, along with letters to the editor and other continuing columns.

Gift of A.M. Sullivan, 1953.

Biographical Note:

A Miss Byles signature appears at the top of the first page of each scrapbook entry, and it is assumed that she was the original collector or copier of the gathered literary works.  There is no further information about her, although she was likely a resident of Burlington, New Jersey.

Provenance Note:

This collection was donated by Mr. A.M. Sullivan, October 7, 1953.

Scope and Content Note:

This hard cover scrapbook entitled, “A Collection of Romantic Poetry and Prose, 1835” contains handwritten copies of ten of the first twelve issues of the Burlington Starry Journal (February-October 1835), and one copy of La Pileine Lune or the Mysterious Visitor (April 1835).  These two weekly papers contain both poetry and prose, along with letters to the editor and other continuing columns.

Of particular interest is the singular copy of The Mysterious Visitor, which is most likely a copy of The Rural Visitor, a short lived literary journal produced in Burlington in 1835 by Joseph L. Powell.  Mr. Powell was also the publisher of The Burlington Gazette.

Processed by Stephen Sullivan, November 1999 as part of the “Farm to City” project funded by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.
