Speeches and one poem written by undergraduates at the Col-
lege of
New Jersey (now Princeton University). Apparently col-
lected by
Henry W. Green, this manuscript volume includes the
following
compositions:
1.
“Honoriad” — a poem byJohn A. Stuart of Beaufort, S.C.
descibing a group
of his classmates.
2. Speech
written and delivered byJohn A. Stuart in 1819 on the
mistreatment
of Arnerican Indians.
3. Speech
delivered by William P. Finley of Charleston, S.C. before the
senior
class, February 18, 1820, and entitled “On the Dismemberment
of
Poland.”
4. Speech
delivered before the senior class, February 18, 1820, by James H.
Gholson of Virginia on the “Effects of Religion on
Government, Particular-
ly the Mahometan.”
5. Speech
written by Bloornfield McIlvaine of NewJersey in 1814 on Spanish
co-
lonial policy in the Americas.
At the end of the volume is a complete list of the
“”Subjects of
Senior
Speeches of 1819 & 1820.” Henry W. Green graduated
from the
College of New Jersey in 1820 and later became
Chancellor
of the State of NewJersey.
