Summary:

Deeds, wills, and other documents of a family from Morris County.  Included is an 1868 petition from the taxpayers of Passaic Township concerning the Passaic Valley and Peapack Railroad Company.

Biographical Note:

Uzal Tomkins, the eldest son of Hannah Goble and the Reverend Icahbod Tomkins, was born on October 26, 1747.  He was a carpenter in Morristown, New Jersey, where he also lived.  On January 19, 1769, he married Martha Reeves (ca. 1751-1770), who, after giving birth to a son, Jared (1770-d.infancy), died on August 22 of the same year.  On December 30, 1771, Uzal Tomkins married his second wife, Susanna Benjamin (1748-1817), with whom he had eleven children: Peter (1772-1836), Jacob (1773-1853), Abraham (1775-1777), Robert (1776-1776), Jonathan (1778-1832), Hannah (1780-1860), Sarah (1782-1850, Squier (1783-1847), Martha (1785-1861), Eunice (1787-1873), and Henry (1788-1826).  Susanna Benjamin Tomkins died on January 25, 1817, and on September 16 of that same year, Uzal married his third wife, Elizabeth Osborne (d. 1834).  Uzal Tomkins died on April 12, 1831.

Jacob Tomkins, the son of Susanna and Uzal Tomkins, was born on November 13, 1773.  He resided in Morristown, New Jersey and married Mary Goble (1781-1868) on September 11, 1799.  Mary and Jacob Tomkins had five children together: Mary Cooper (b. 1805), Deborah (1807-1898), John Stiles (1812-1861), Phebe (1814-1897) and Chilion (1819-1871).  Jacob Tomkins died on July 5, 1853.

Scope and Content Note:

The collection consists of nine folders of papers used by the Tomkins Family of Morris County, New Jersey.  The documents date from 1795-1868 and are largely made up of land deeds.  In addition, the collection contains a survey map; a release of dower; probate records, which include a copy of the will of Jacob Tomkins; bonds; and a petition signed by the taxpayers of Passaic in support of the Passaic Valley and Peapack Railroad Company.  The documents are sorted by type and then arranged chronologically.
