On August 3, 1830, Wolfe made Jesse B. Pitt his attorney for the express purpose of collecting on the unpaid accounts recorded in this daybook and in an accompanying ledger. Wolfe ran a general store in Newark.

This collection consists of a daybook kept by William H. Wolfe from 1828-1830. The daybook contains chronological entries for each transaction consisting of date, customer, item bought, and price. Wolfe sold a wide variety of goods which included: shoes, oak timber, blinds (what we know today as shutters), locks, hinges, ladders, glass, turpentine, candles, and lights. He also sold a number of consumables including wheat flour, coffee, sugar, rice, mackerel, butter, tea, spirits, molasses, bread, eggs, crackers, and sausage. Some of Wolfe’s customers were: the Baldwin family, Daniel Baker, William H. Harris, Isaac Nutman, A. W. Kinney, Moses Dodd, Peter Roy, Thomas Pierson, Isaac Brant, and M. Whitehead.
