MG 74 The New Jersey Historical Society Finding aid encoded by Julia Telonidis. August 2005. Production of the EAD 2002 version of this finding aid was made possible by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Finding aid written in English. Biographical NoteNathaniel Baldwin (fl. 1769-1799), the son of Elijah Baldwin (ca. 1718-1766), was probably the great-grandson of John Baldwin, Sr., a shoemaker from Milford, Connecticut who was granted tracts of land in Newark, New Jersey. Nathaniel Baldwin, and probably his father and his brother Elias, were also Newark shoemakers. It is possible that the three were in business together. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteNathaniel Baldwin’s account book contains records from the years 1769-1799, with the majority of transactions taking place in the 1770s. Accounts are labeled with the name of the customer and each entry includes the date, job, and price. Typical jobs include mending, making, and soling shoes and boots. There is an index located in the front of the volume, a number of torn-out pages in the rear, and loose papers inserted between the pages that record additional account information. These papers have been left in their original location. Return to the Table of Contents RestrictionsAccess RestrictionsThere are no access restrictions on this collection.
