Finding aid written in English. Historical NoteThe Society of Friends, a religious group whose members are called Quakers, started up the Delaware River in 1675. They were the first settlers of Bordentown and the surrounding area known then as Farnsworth’s Landing. The Quaker’s willingness to deal with the harsh life made them permanent settlers where the gentry were not willing to go. By 1736, Joseph Borden had settled the area that is today known Bordentown. The Bordentown Meeting was established by Chesterfield Monthly Meeting in 1739. The preparative meetings were established in 1775, but discontinued in 1778. A second preparative meeting was established in 1804. The Orthodox preparative meeting and meeting for worship were discontinued in 1828 and the members reverted back to the Chesterfield Preparative Meeting. Meanwhile the Bordentown Preparative Meeting, Hicksite, continued until 1878. Their members were also transferred to Chesterfield Preparative Meeting. In 1904 the Bordentown Meeting was discontinued altogether. The Bordentown Meeting house still stands today. The minutes record business issues of concern to the Meeting, including dues and attendance as well as topics of discussion.
