Historical Note

In October and November of 1777, the Continental Army was in retreat after losses at the battles of Germantown and Fort Mifflin. George Washington’s forces were camped at Whitemarsh, Pennsylvania during the battle of Germantown and before retirement to Valley Forge in January of 1778. This period nearly brought the breakdown of the Continental Army’s supply system, and the troops settled in for a difficult winter at Valley Forge. This regiment was under the command of Colonel Matthias Ogden (1754-1791).

Scope and Content Note

This volume is an orderly book used by the First New Jersey Continental Regiment while stationed in Whitemarsh and Valley Forge, Pennsylvania from November 20, 1777 to February 18, 1778. Orders were entered by Adjutant Jacob Piatt.

An orderly book is usually used by the orderly sergeants or the aide de camp to enter general and regimental orders, and there is usually one for each company. Orders were issued from November 20, 1777 to January 13, 1778 at Whitemarsh, Pennsylvania; from January 14 to February 18, 1778 at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania; and weekly officer records were made from February 6-27, 1788. Typical orders recorded regard troop movements and formation, procurement of uniforms, repair of arms, rations of food and rum, and court marshal proceedings.
