Finding aid written in English. Biographical NoteDaniel Roberts was a journeyman woolen material dyer, who also sought opportunities to teach the trade. It was in this quest that he set out on his six-year journey, in 1794. This journey would take him from his home in Connecticut, through eastern New York State and Northern New Jersey, then moving west into Eastern Pennsylvania. Prior to returning to his home in Connecticut, he would again travel through New Jersey and New York. His odyssey was mainly accomplished via horseback in the company of friends and acquaintances, stopping at their homes, as well as at inns and taverns along the way while making new friends and acquaintances at each new locale. He also traveled along the Hudson, Delaware, and Susquehanna Rivers via schooner and canoe. Twice he was able to settle in and teach his craft to schools for periods of one year each, in Teaneck, New Jersey in 1796, and in Philadelphia in 1798. After leaving Philadelphia, he visited friends through New Jersey in Morristown, Hackensack, Newark, and Elizabethtown before deciding to return to visit friends and family in his native Litchfield County, Connecticut. Among the friends visited were Beverwyck Estates owner Tobias Boudinot and Old Paramus landowner Jacob Zabriskie. Boudinot’s estate previously belonged to his father-in-law, Lucas Von Beverhoudt, and it encompassed over 670 acres in Parsippany, N.J. During the Revolutionary Was, it was the center of Morris County social and political activities. Zabriskie owned an 80-acre farm and gristmill along the Saddle River, and was popularly known as “King Jacob” in Bergen County. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteThis collection consists of a photostatic copy of a journal kept by Daniel Roberts between May 1, 1794 and July 12, 1800, detailing his travel experiences from Connecticut through New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
