Biographical Note

Albert O. Cheney was a colored Union soldier during the Civil War from 1861-1865. Cheney, a resident of Orange, New Jersey traveled to Trenton to join the Union Army.

In 1864, Cheney became an officer in Company K and D, 127th U. S. Colored Troops. He also seems to have been with the Colored Troops before this time. He was stationed in various cities, such as Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Trenton, and Baltimore.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of nine letters dating from April 26th, 1861 to May 22nd, 1865. These letters were written by Albert O. Cheney to his “Dear Sister Mary” L. French of West Avon, Connecticut, with the exception of one letter addressed to his brother, name unknown. In these letters Albert discusses his role as an officer in the Civil War traveling through different cities and various subjects including general military life, officers, and war news. He informs his sister and brother about the events of the war and explains his causes for fighting in the war. He occasionally mentions friends and family in Orange.
