John Dipper was born a slave in Williamsburg, Virginia in 1778, and was manumitted in 1816 at the age of 38. Two years later Dipper purchased the freedom of his wife, Edy, and subsequently the freedom of a son. In 1829, Dipper became a minister in the Baptist Church of Christ in Williamsburg. Dipper and his second wife, Polly, moved to Red Bank, New Jersey in 1833. The collection includes business correspondence, and personal letters between Dipper and his eldest son, John, Jr., his daughter-in-law Becky, and his younger son, Thomas. Included are deeds of emancipation, bills of sale, bonds, and miscellaneous documents. Detailed inventory available.
