Summary:

Household accounts kept by an Orange, New Jersey resident and his wife, Charlotte R. Condit. Lists expenses on a variety of foodstuffs as well as costs for the “washwoman,” dentist, druggist, and coal. This volume consists of daily entries of expenditures, chiefly of food.The volume also provides information reflecting the cost of living, income, savings and related economical factors effecting a family.

Biographical Note:

The Edward I. Condit who kept this account book is likely to have been the son of Edward and Mary Robinson Condit who married in 1834 and were also residents of Orange, New Jersey.

Provenance Note:

The Edward I. Condit Account book was found in 1982 by the Keeper of Manuscripts in the stacks of Archive Documents, Manuscripts, Maps, & Photographs with no related information concerning either the book itself, or the donor. Accordingly, this volume has been accessioned as 82-19.
