Biographical Note
Mahlon Ford Dickerson, the only son of Julia Ford (1772-1794) and Silas Dickerson (1771-1807), was born on July 21, 1794 in Morris County, New Jersey. Both of his parents died by the time he was thirteen, leaving Charles Ford, probably his maternal uncle, his legal guardian.
Mahlon Ford. Dickerson went into partnership with his paternal uncle and namesake Mahlon Dickerson (1770-1853), opening a general store called M.F. Dickerson & Co. in Dover, Morris County, New Jersey. The store had a close relationship with the nearby Dickerson Iron Mine, run by Mahlon Dickerson, yet seems to have done poorly. The Dickersons dissolved their partnership in 1817, with the younger Dickerson retaining the company. Mahlon F. Dickerson was in the midst of financial troubles at the time of his death on May 22, 1823 in Stanhope, New Jersey. He died at the age of 28 and never married.
