Scope and Content Note

Sallie Marshall’s scrapbook includes newspaper clippings, drawings, picture engravings, photographs, and obituaries. There are several pages of poems cut from various newspapers. These poems cover topics such as love, death, friendship, and slavery. The scrapbook also contains two handwritten poems titled All About Eyes and Trenton in 1900. Trenton in 1900 is a narrative poem describing the experiences of someone who returns to Trenton after years of absence and is shocked by all the changes in the city. The scrapbook also includes newspaper clippings on topics from jewelry to women’s suffrage. There are four undated photographs in the scrapbook. Also included is a letter giving advice on how to have a successful and happy marriage.

The scrapbook contains several ink drawings of rural landscapes and forest scenes. There is also one watercolor depicting the front of a house. There are several picture engravings in the scrapbook including engravings of Henry Clay and General William T. Sherman. Other engravings in the scrapbook include Tobit and the Angel and The Bridge Over the Mosel at Coblenz.

The scrapbook also contains two handwritten obituaries. One obituary is for Isabella Williams Sherting who died in Trenton on April 15, 1864 at the age of 13. The obituary uses Isabella’s diaries and correspondence to paint a picture of her life. The obituary includes anecdotes about her life including that she gave up sweets in protest to slavery and that she would crochet “articles of comfort” for soldiers during the Civil War. The obituary also provides a detailed account of the last days of her illness. The second, shorter obituary is for 18-year old Rebecca Yardley who died on May 18, 1851. The scrapbook also contains obituaries that were cut from newspapers.
