Biographical NoteThe authorship of this diary is unknown, however, newspaper clippings included within the volume feature the name of John H. Beekman, an attorney from Somerville, New Jersey. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteThis collection consists of a lawyer’s diary with entries beginning in June 1929 and ending in 1974. The diary is divided into two parts; the first part is a section for personal notes and records, while the second part is a printed bar directory. The first part of the diary serves as an appointment book, and contains names and addresses of clients as well as account information. The addresses are located mostly in New York City and various New Jersey cities including Elizabeth, Bayonne, and North Plainfield. The diary also includes a payment balance for the years 1928-1931, and then again for the years 1968-1974. Following this is a balance for 1928-1929 that compares the money brought in by the lawyer with that paid out for the year. These balances list the names and dates of clients as well as the amount charged, and indicate whether or not the fee was paid. The diary also contains a number of newspaper clippings, the earliest dating from 1952. Two of the articles include tips for golfers, while the others report recent tournament results. The second part of the diary serves as an informational guidebook outlining the common practice rules for the court system, and includes a section dedicated to the schedules and court hearings of each county within New Jersey. The collection also contains a photograph of a courtroom with the American flag suspended behind the judge and a typed copy of the will of Helen B. Werblin, possibly a client of the lawyer.
