Biographical Note
George Pierson, the fifth of the ten children of Nancy Crane (1775-1841) and Dr. Isaac Pierson (1770-1833), was born on October 16, 1805 in Orange, New Jersey. He graduated from Princeton College (now University) in 1823 and became the pastor at the First Presbyterian Church of Orange and then the First Presbyterian Church of Wantage, New Jersey. He married Eliza L. Day in Orange, New Jersey and with her and their family moved to Florida, New York, where be became the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church there.
Eliza and George Pierson had eight children together: Sarah Ann, George Wilson, Isaac (d. young), Caroline Ellet (b. 1837), Stephen Day (b. 1839), Fanny E. (1841-young), Mary (d. 1849), Charles W., and Ellen Collins. After Eliza Pierson’s death, George Pierson married Caroline Stoll.
George Wilson Pierson, George and Eliza’s son, studied at the Flushing Institute from 1847-1849 and from there moved to Newark, New Jersey where he studied to become a doctor. He married Sarah C. Wheeler, and with her had at least two children: Charles W. and Eliza D.

The source of this collection is unknown.
Processing Information
These papers were originally housed with Manuscript Group 384. At the time of processing, they were removed and formed into a separate collection. The letters and most of the receipts are in good condition, however, many of the receipts are beginning to show wear. The ink and pencil on some of the letters and receipts is fading.

Scope and Content:
The letters are from and to various Pierson family members. The majority of them are either written to George Wilson Pierson or by Sarah Ann Pierson. The letters are generally of a personal nature detailing what is happening and information on other acquaintances. There are a couple business letters written to the Rev. George Pierson that refer to the church were he was pastor.

Series 2: Receipts, 1824-1878

Scope and Content:
The receipts included in this series belong to George Pierson, and document items he purchased, his account lists with various stores, and the money he owes his church. Some of the more interesting receipts are for a train ticket to Chester on October 31, 1856 and magazine subscriptions for magazines such as The Working Farmer, New York Observer, and Presbyterian Quarterly Review.

Scope and Content:
This series includes school compositions on subjects such as Christmas, Columbus, and “Proofs of the Being of God.” The compositions appear to be written by George W. Pierson. There is also a small piece of paper with some handwritten notes written on it, which has neither a date nor an author.
