Summary

Summary:

Deeds, correspondence, receipts, and estate papers of the Sydenham or Sidman family of Newark and Bloomfield.  Includes correspondence of Elias Boudinot (1740-1821) and Peter Ogden (b.1757).

Gift of Charles C. Gardner, 1958.

Biographical Note:

John Sydenham, the son of Susanna Handcock (b. 1690) and John Sydenham (ca. 1688-ca. 1747), was born in Newark, New Jersey on March 16, 1714.  As an adult, he worked as a yeoman farmer in the town of his birth, and, on December 8, 1741, married Martha Longworth (1724-1804), the daughter of Dorcas and Thomas Longworth (1692-1748).  Martha and John had seven children together: Dorcas (1741/42-1744/45), David (b. 1744), William (1746-ca. 1750), John (b. 1748), Susannah (1750-1819), William (b. 1751), and Thomas (1753-1816).  John Sydenham died in Newark, New Jersey on November 1, 1754.

Thomas Sydenham was born on November 4, 1753.  He was a shoemaker in Bloomfield, New Jersey.  In October 1779, he married Sarah Fordham (b. Dec. 16, 1758), with whom he had seven children: Susannah (1780-1852), Martha (1783-1788), John (1785-1859), Mary (1788-1871), Sarah (1791-1831), David (1794-1825), and Bethia (1798-1840).  As these children entered adulthood, the family started consistently spelling their surname as Sidman.  Thomas Sydenham/Sidman died August 12, 1816.

Provenance Note:

This collection was donated by Charles C. Gardner in 1958.

Scope and Content Note:

The Papers largely consist of the land indentures and correspondence of the Sydenham/Sidman Family of Newark and Bloomfield, New Jersey, dating from 1759-1909.  The papers also contain a smaller number of receipts, estate papers, a marriage certificate, and a photograph.  The documents have been arranged by record type and then by date.

The indentures, dating from 1794-1852, pertain to family land transactions in Newark and Bloomfield, New Jersey.  The correspondence, dating from 1784-1909, includes letters written by Peter Ogden (b. 1757), Elias Boudinot (1740-1821), Margaret Stockholm, and Charles W. Stewart.  Of particular interest is Peter Ogden’s 1784 letter regarding loyalists in the Revolution, and an undated, unsigned letter confirming the sale of land referred to as “Lord Perth’s Proprietory Estate” in East Jersey.
