A collection of materials concerning the Pitney family of
Mendham, N.J. Included are dockets kept by Morris County
justices of the peace: Jesse Upson, 1803-1807, and Mahlon Pitney,
1836-1843; early records of the Pitney Farm including account
books listing the sales of apples and spirits, 1807-1811, and
cash books and ledgers covering business transactions through
1852; the cook book of A. G. Ballantine, 1870; scrapbook of
theater and recital programs, 1900-1903; an inventory of the
household furnishings of John O.H. Pitney, 1910-1911; records and
accounts of the Mendham Aqueduct Company, 1852-1863; scrapbook of
clippings relating to Morris Aqueduct Company, 1919-1922;
household account book, 1920-1928; blueprints for a residential
structure and an “automobile house,” 1908-1912; Pitney
family bills, 1912-1932; diary of Roberta A. Ballantine,
1887-1888; a date book kept by John Williams Pitney while at
Milton Academy in 1935; survey maps; genealogical information on
the Halstead family; and correspondence including that of John
Ballantine Pitney written while fighting in World War I and that
of his son, Princeton University student John Williams Pitney,
who fought and died in World War II. Inventory available.
