Historical Note

In 1664, Charles II, King of England, granted the colony known as New Jersey to his brother, James, Duke of York. Sub-division of New Jersey proceeded as James, Duke of York, made subsequent grants of land within the colony.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of a legal brief, dated October 22, 1730, which concerns a dispute over 1100 acres of land in Somerset County, New Jersey. The legal brief was brought before John Montgomerie, the Colonial Governor, by David Coosaart and Rut van Horn against Effigham Townley, et al. In the brief, David Coosaart and Rut van Horn, plaintiffs, state their claim to the parcel of land in question.
