Benjamin Scudder probably resided in either Essex or Union County, New Jersey during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
This collection consists of a ledger, receipts, and statements detailing the account balances of Benjamin Scudder from 1784-1832. The ledger lists many people associated with Benjamin Scudder, although exact relationships are not known. Each individual account is divided into debit and credit columns. Many entries report the sale or purchase of various foodstuffs. Entries listing the performance of manual labor, such as chopping wood, fixing farm equipment, and mowing grass, are also prevalent. The entries in the ledger indicate that Benjamin Scudder might have owned land that was farmed and operated a mill.
This collection should be cited as: Manuscript Group 1593, Benjamin Scudder Ledger, The New Jersey Historical Society.
Donated by John Strahan in August 2002.
