Biographical NoteJohn Whitehead, son of William Whitehead, cashier of Newark Banking and Insurance Company, entered the mercantile profession in New York. He later moved to Mobile, Alabama and was a resident of Key West from 1824-1832, when he moved to New Orleans. Returning to New York, John Whitehead held the vice-presidency of a leading insurance company. He died on August 29, 1864. His brother, William A. Whitehead, served as an executor of his will. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteThis collection consists of checks dating from 1864-1871 drawn off the estate of John Whitehead held at the Phenix National Bank in New York City. During the course of the eight years in which checks were drawn, two men served as executors of the estate: H.P. Fessenden (1864-1867) and William A. Whitehead (1868-1871).
