Charles and Florence Payne both attended the Elliot Street School in Newark during the early twentieth century. The school itself was originally built in 1871 and was renovated in 1921.
The collection contains nine photographs of school children posing for their class portraits at the Elliot Street School. The photographs follow the academic career of Charles and Florence Payne, although neither is identified in the images. Many of the class portraits are taken inside the classroom, but some are taken outdoors by the school building. The portraits also feature the African-American classmates of the Paynes.
The collection contains, too, a program for the June of 1905 Graduating Exercises of Elliot Street School students including Charles Payne, as well as a button commemorating an event that took place at the school in December of 1906.
This collection should be cited as: Manuscript Group 1602, Elliot Street School Collection, The New Jersey Historical Society.
Donated by Rita Sawyer to the New Jersey Historical Society in June 2003.
