Biographical Note:

Born in Hopewell, New Jersey ca. 1869, Runkle Rae was a private in the United States Infantry during the Philippine-American War (1899-1913). This war erupted at the close of the Spanish-American War (1898) over the Philippines’ right to self governance. Runkle Rae enlisted in 1899 and was a private in Company 1, 3rd Infantry, under the command of Col. John H. Page and Capt. Maurcy Nichels. He took part in General Wheaton’s Campaign (March 1899) and General Lawton’s Expedition (April-May, 1899) among many others. He also served under General Frederick Dent Grant (son of Ulysses S. Grant) from 1899 to 1902. He was honorably discharged at Angel Island, California on January 17, 1902.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains various documents pertaining to Runkle Rae’s service in the military. These documents include a an official “Army of the Philippines” certificate, a photocopy of his recruitment card and enlistment form, handwritten and typewritten acccounts of his service, and a copy of an old photograph of Runkle Rae and his wife, and a newspaper clipping of Frederick Dent Grant.
