Biographical NoteWilliam and Max Shiffenhaus founded the Schiffenhaus Packaging Corporation in 1895. The corporation was originally established to manufacture set-up and wooden boxes. In 1915, the two brothers parted, and William sought to take the corporation in a new direction while Max left to start his own company. In 1923, William’s son, Joseph joined the company and in 1928, the business was incorporated under the name Schiffenhaus Brothers. In 1946, William died and his son took over control of the corporation. Under Joseph’s control the company took on several new directions, including preprint packaging and display work. Under the tutelage of Joseph, his two sons Anton and Larry learned the ropes of the company for several decades until 1981 when they purchased the company’s stock from the family trust. During their time as leaders of the company, Anton and Larry Schiffenhaus expanded the company once more, by entering the storage box business. During their time as leaders of the company, both Anton and Larry made several goals promising to commit to environmentally friendly packaging, focusing on printing capabilities and begin preparing Chip and Jody Schiffenhaus as the fourth generation of the Corporation. Currently, both Chip and Jody run the day-to-day operations and they are beginning to train the fifth generation of the Schiffenhaus family. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteThis collection includes numerous types of materials from the century of the Schiffenhaus Packaging Corporation’s operations. There are black and white photographs from 1899 that show the workers, their material and their working conditions. There are also both large and small back and white photographs from 1999 that show similar images. These images from 1999 also showcase some of technology that is used within the Schiffenhaus Corporation. There are various pamphlets and handbooks containing information about the Schiffenhaus Corporation. There is a series of Schiffenhaus Corporation Living Company Treasure sheets, which document workers who have shown loyalty to the company. There are also a series of the Schiffenhaus Company newsletter, the Flute, ranging from Winter 1984 to Winter 1991. There is also a group of miscellaneous material, including a work order and sticker.
