Biographical Note:

August Schuren was an immigrant to Newark, a cabinetmaker by occupation, who fought in the Franco-Prussian War. He had several sons, among them Otto Joseph Schuren and Henry Joseph Schuren. Otto Joseph Schuren (1894-1971) served in Company M, 113th Infantry, 29th Div. in World War I during 1917-1919. Henry J. Schuren (1898-1984) also served during World War I in Company A 130 Machine Gun Battalion and was involved in the Battle of Verdun. No information is available on the J. Schuren mentioned in the collection.

Scope and Content Note

Included are three World War I related handbooks belonging to the Schuren family. There is Otto Joseph Schuren’s “Handbook to Northern France” which provided useful details on the terrain and topography of the area. There is also a pamphlet titled “The Burial of War Veterans” published in Hoboken, N.J. ca. 1930, with the name Henry J. Schuren stamped inside. There is a booklet titled “Manual of Guard Duty” of the U.S. Army, published in 1908 with the name J. Schuren stamped inside. The first 30 pages are missing.
