Biographical Note

Peter Kanouse, 1784-1864, was born in Rockaway Valley, Morris County. He studied at Bloomfield Academy and pursued theological studies under the direction of Rev. James Richards of Newark. He was ordained in 1809 and began his career as pastor of a Presbyterian church in Succasunna.

He then served as minister at the Old Clove Church in Wantage Township from 1830-1834 where he had been on the board of trustees, 1812-1818. Later he served as a minister in Newark and subsequently served as a missionary to the Indians in Sussex County. In addition, Kanouse taught at Newton Academy in Newton from 1828-1829.

Scope and Content Note

This volume contains the sermons of Reverend Peter Krause preached during his career. The sermons were given at several locations in New Jersey including churches in Succasunna, Wantage Township, and Newark.

The volume also contains a newsprint German poem translated into English and the calling card of Alida Reach. The connection of either of these items to the sermon book is unknown.
