Biographical NoteVirgil Markle was a Monmouth County based civil engineer in charge of building coastal highways near Sea Girt, N.J. He was a licensed by the State of New Jersey as a municipal and highway engineer and land surveyor and was employed by the State of New Jersey Highway Department in the 1920s and 1930s. He was responsible for the construction of the southern Monmouth County section of Route No. 35, among several other roads and highways in the County of Monmouth. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteThis collection consists of correpondence, booklets, time cards, photographs, brochures, and notebooks pertaining to the career of Virgil Markle, a Monmouth County based civil engineer. There is also a folder of large sized blueprints in this collection. The photographs are of work sites, buildings, roads, and vehicles. There are miscellaneous publications, many of which are advertisements for construction related products such as concrete and measuring tapes. There are also several brochures of the Keuffel and Esser Company, a New Jersey based manufacturer of surveying equipment. There are also professional licenses, small surveying aids, and time cards pertaining to his employment at the State of New Jersey Highway Department. There is a proposal for highway beautification of Route No. 35 in Belmar and a yearly report of the Central Construction Division.
