Biographical NoteSteven Coerts Van Voorhees emigrated from Ruinen, Holland to the United States in April 1660 and settled in Flatlands, Long Island, New York (present day Brooklyn). He was married 3 times and had a total of 10 children. In 1686, his son, Albert Stevens Voorhees purchased land near Hackensack, N.J. Subsequent generations of the Voorhees family settled throughout Hunterdon, Somerset and Middlesex Counties, New Jersey. Some of the more prominent Voorhees family members include Abraham Voorhees, who was closely affiliated with Rutgers College, having contributed both money and property to the institution. In the 1880s, John J. Voorhees, a sixth generation descendant of Steven Coerts Van Voorhees, became president of the Voorhees Rubber Manufacturing Company of Jersey City, one of the most successful businesses of its kind in the country. In the 20th century, the Voorhees family descendants are numerous and retain communication through the Van Voorhees Association, an organization that produces Voorhees family newsletters and coordinates annual family reunions. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteThis collection includes the Voorhees family Bible, which was printed in Holland in 1640 or 1641 and contains hand-written family records dating from 1645 through the late 18th century. The book was brought to this country in 1660 by the original immigrant ancestor of the Voorhees family, Steven Coerte Van Voorhees. The collection also includes photographs, correspondence, essays, a genealogical chart, a marriage certificate and other items that document the history and genealogy of the Voorhees family.
