Biographical Note

Steven Coerts Van Voorhees emigrated from Ruinen, Holland to the United States in April 1660 and settled in Flatlands, Long Island, New York (present day Brooklyn). He was married 3 times and had a total of 10 children. In 1686, his son, Albert Stevens Voorhees purchased land near Hackensack, N.J. Subsequent generations of the Voorhees family settled throughout Hunterdon, Somerset and Middlesex Counties, New Jersey. Some of the more prominent Voorhees family members include Abraham Voorhees, who was closely affiliated with Rutgers College, having contributed both money and property to the institution. In the 1880s, John J. Voorhees, a sixth generation descendant of Steven Coerts Van Voorhees, became president of the Voorhees Rubber Manufacturing Company of Jersey City, one of the most successful businesses of its kind in the country. In the 20th century, the Voorhees family descendants are numerous and retain communication through the Van Voorhees Association, an organization that produces Voorhees family newsletters and coordinates annual family reunions.
