Biographical Note

Walter W. Henry, a Private of the 77th Aero Squadron, Air Service, United States Army, enlisted on December 14, 1917 and received an honorable discharge on December 5, 1918.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of two letters written by Walter W. Henry to his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Millard Davis. The first letter is dated March 17, 1918, while the second letter is dated May 15, 1918. Also included in the collection is his discharge certificate, issued by the United States government on October 6, 1945.

Davis], Paterson, New Jersey. Explaining his
military transfer from Waco, Texas to Ft. Worth,
Texas, describing his training to become an aerial
gunner and the responsibilities that come along
with the position.

1 1 Outgoing letter: to “Dear Aunt and Uncle” [i.e. Mr.
and Mrs. Millard Davis], Paterson, New Jersey.
Reporting that he has been interviewed by his
Major as a potential candidate for ground school in
order to become a non-commissioned flier, saying
that he has visited Dallas, “the best town in the
Southwest,” and inquiring into the state of affairs
in New Jersey.

1 1 Discharge certificate: Enlisted on December 14, 1917, received an
honorable discharge on December 5, 1918, by
reason of “demobilization.” Although his discharge
occurred in 1918, this document was not issued
until 1945.
