Pell represented Rev. Hannibal Goodwin (1822-1900), Rector of The (Episcopal) House of Prayer, in litigation with the Eastman Kodak Company. Goodwin’s chemical experimentation had culminated in 1887 in the invention of flexible, celluloid photographic film. He applied for the patent in that year, but it was not granted until 1893. Meanwhile, Henry M. Reichenbach, an Eastman Kodak chemist, filed successfully for a patent on a similar film. Goodwin’s heirs brought suit through Charles H. Pell in 1902. The suit was successful, and, after years of litigation, the primacy of Goodwin’s patent received posthumous recognition in 1914.
Gift of Mrs. Harold Deming Clark, Jr., Mrs. James A. Lyons, Jr., and Pell Hollingshead, 1958.
