family of Monmouth, Sussex, and Warren counties. The bulk of the
collection is comprised of letters (1864-1904) written to Henry
W. Johnson of Long Branch and Matawan by his brother, Dr. John
Johnson, a Blairstown physician. Some letters in this
series were written to Henry Johnson by his other brother Samuel,
a Sussex County surrogate of Newton. Subjects covered in
letters include: religious and community affairs of
Blairstown, Newton and Matawan, N.J.; local fires; dry-goods
trade; and family health, travel and finance. Also includes
records retained by William Henry Johnson from 1821 to 1828 as an
officer in the Sussex County Militia; miscellaneous papers of the
widows Anna, Rachel, and Rebecca Johnson consisting primarily of
receipts and documents concerning widows pensions
(1815-1878); and accounts and miscellaneous documents (1797-1804)
of Henry Johnson.
