(1843-1907), Civil War officer.
Papers, 1861-1905.  1/2 ft.

 
Correspondence, diaries, military orders, discharge papers, maps
of Civil War battlefields and historical sketches by Mindil who
volunteered for the Union Army and rose to become chief of staff
to General Philip Kearney and later became the youngest brigadier
general in the Union forces.  After the war, Mindil was a
member of the Union League in Philadelphia, worked in the watch
and jewelry trade in New York and Philadelphia, and took the
position of “Jewelry Examiner in the Public Stores” at
the New York Custom House in the fall of 1895.   Collection
includes: military correspondence received by Mindil, 1861-1865;
diaries, 1863-1866, detailing military maneuvers, weather
conditions, notations regarding letters sent and those received,
visits to the Union League, and excursions to the theater;
testimonial letters addressed to the United States president
recommending Mindil as a “port warden” and an
autobiographical sketch.
