Scope
and Content Note:
The
Miriam V. Studley Papers span the years
1853-1962. The documents in this manuscript group were
collected by Miriam V. Studley, who was both a librarian and
collector. This collection contains specimen pages, interim
and final drafts of the Atlantic City, Camden, Elizabeth,
Hackensack, Paterson and the Oranges and Maplewood sections of
the Federal Writers Project publication New Jersey: A Guide to
its Present and its Past. The collection also includes
genealogical material on the Bowles, Woodruff, Ward, and Brown
families; photographs of the Morris Canal; research notes on New
Jersey eighteenth- and nineteenth-century paper mills; and
correspondence from Henry G. Alsberg, director of Federal Writers
Project, Irene Fuhlbregge, state supervisor of the Works Progress
Administration, and Beatrice Winser, librarian, Newark Public
Library.
