Collection, 1762 – 1893. 6 linear feet
Call Number: MG 1193
A large collection of Pennsylvania and New Jersey legal documents
and correspondence. Included are letters received by Mercer
County, Pennsylvania, attorney Samuel Holstein, 1832-1888;
surveys, maps and legal documents concerning Belvidere Estate in
the Township of Oxford, Sussex County (later Warren County);
deeds and legal papers concerning the Croxall family of Sussex
County, 1762-1893; letters received by Garret D. Wall of Trenton,
N.J., 1823-1849; receipts and accounts of Philadelphia merchant
Stephen Dutilh with masters and captains of various ships,
1780-1831; summonses, summaries of decisions and other papers of
the Warren County Circuit Court, 1842-1863; and lists of cases
brought before the Warren County Court, 1820s-1860s. Also
included is material relative to Peter Vroom and Dr. Robert Bond
and miscellaneous legal papers pertaining to the New Jersey
courts of chancery, appeals, and supreme court.
Gift of the Hackettstown Historical Society, 1983.
Collection, 1762-1863, of Dr. George Wyckoff Cummins (1865-1942) of
Belvidere, N.J. (Warren County). A graduate of Columbia
University College of Physicians and Surgeons (1890), he was also
granted a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Yale (1887), where he served
as a physiological chemistry and mathematics instructor. Dr.
Cummins practiced medicine in Belvidere for nearly fifty years
and played an active role in the American Association for the
Advancement of Science and the American Medical Association of
New Jersey. He is known for inventing improved methods of
annealing copper, iron, and copper wire, and in addition, he is
the author of The History of Warren County, Indian
Relics around Belvidere, and The Annealing of Copper.
The collection consists of Pennsylvania and New Jersey legal
documents and correspondence organized in three groups. The
records of Warren County Circuit Court and the New Jersey Supreme
Court comprise the bulk of the collection, and include cases,
subpoenas, summonses, summaries of decisions, and other legal
documents (1820s-1860s). The second group consists of
papers of Warren County residents, including deeds, subpoenas,
court records, wills, letters, receipts, and other items,
arranged alphabetically by surname. Of note is an account
book (1857-1863) from a saw mill in Vienna, N.J; a photograph of
a lynching (n.d.); and letters (1824-1888) addressed to Samuel
Holstein, a Mercer County, Pennsylvania, lawyer.
The third group contains legal documents and correspondence of
prominent men from Warren County, N.J., including deeds, letters,
petitions, and maps (1762-1893) of the Croxall family concerning
their property in the township of Oxford, the Belvidere estate.
Also, papers of Garret D. Wall (1783-1850), a U.S. Senator and
lawyer based in Trenton, N.J., who handled the affairs of the
Croxall family, and who eventually gained ownership of Belvidere
estate; letters and documents of Peter D. Vroom (1791-1873), a
New Jersey Governor; his son, Garret D.W. Vroom (1843-1914); and
Dr. Robert Bond (1853-1891), as well as public records from other
New Jersey counties. Of interest are letters and receipts
(1780-1831) of Stephen and John Dutilh, a merchant and
shipping firm located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Gift of the Hackettstown Historical Society, 1983.
