Finding aid written in English. Biographical NoteJohn C. Lloyd (1796-1881), originally from Erie, Pennsylvania moved to Belleville, New Jersey with his young son, Aaron (1817-1905). He opened a tailor shop on Main Street in Belleville, and later was a Justice of Peace for Essex County (1833-1855) and a member of the Belleville Town Committee (1839). On May 19, 1824, John C. Lloyd married Belleville resident Harriet Joralemon, the daughter of Abraham Joralemon, who was presumably his second wife. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteThe collection consists of the dockets, account books, and daybooks of John C. Lloyd, used during his term as Justice of the Peace for Essex County and in his tailoring business in Belleville, New Jersey. The collection also contains a subscription list to various periodicals. The papers contain three volumes of John C. Lloyd’s docket, dating from 1833-1839, 1839-1851, and 1851-1855 respectively. Lloyd largely dealt with debt cases and in his docket recorded any actions taken, his decision on the matter, and any fees. These volumes also contain a small number of loose papers including such items as affidavits, summons, and bills. There are also three record books in the collection that record the business transactions of Lloyd’s tailoring business in Belleville. All of these volumes document such tasks as making, mending, or trimming such items as coats, shirts, and pants. The first volume contains both account information and daybook entries – the first dating from 1824-1825, and the latter from 1827-1832. The second volume is an account book from 1830-1849 and the third volume is a daybook from 1832-1861. Each of these books contains loose receipts, bills, and accounts inserted between its pages. These items have been left in their original locations as some deal with the financial information located on that page. None of the accounts in these volumes are indexed. Lastly, the collection contains a periodical subscription list dating from 1845-1860. The list includes the name of the subscriber, the name of the “paper,” and a record of payment. Periodicals subscribed to include Missionary Magazine, New Jersey Farmer, Temperance Enterprise, Godey’s Ladies Book, Advocate & Journal, and Christian Intelligence. It is unclear what role John C. Lloyd had in the delivery of these magazines, and it is possible that he was the postmaster of Belleville during this time period.
