Historical NoteWilliam Ensley and William Black settled the Mansfield Township area in 1677 and were followed by Quakers including Michael Newbold, Jonathan Bacon and Thomas Scattergood. Mansfield Township, Burlington County was incorporated in 1798 but was reduced in size by Bordentown and the creation of Florence in 1852. Mansfield is one of the northeastern townships of Burlington County bounded on the north and northeast by Bordentown; the northwest by Chesterfield; the south by Springfield; and the southwest by Florence. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteThis collection consists of one volume of minutes of the Mansfield Township Committee with dates from 1697-1773. The meetings were held annually to elect town officers (i.e. clerks, overseers of the highways, overseers of the poor, and constables). The volume also includes residents’ complaints and applications for the construction of roads, “warrants for the relief of the poor,” and lists of cattle earmarks. The township committee met at individual’s homes until 1733 when a Meeting House was finally erected.
