Finding aid written in English. Biographical NoteThe Stiles Family of Morris and Sussex Counties, New Jersey descends from the Connecticut branch of that family. It is from this branch of the family that Jonathan Stiles was born in 1689. He moved from his native Connecticut between the years 1726 and 1730, and relocated to Hanover Township, New Jersey. Ebenezer Stiles, the son of Jonathan Stiles (1689-1758) and his second wife, Elizabeth Taylor, was born in Stratford, Connecticut, in 1726. As a child, he moved to Hanover Township, New Jersey, where he remained for the rest of his life. He was a blacksmith by trade, but his business would expand until he owned a very extensive ironworks. He and his first wife, Polly, had eight children: Rebecca (b. 1756), Hannah (b. 1760), Daniel (b. 1761), Charity (b. 1764), Jemima (b. 1766), Ebenezer (b. 1767), Moses (1771-1854), and Mary. On May 4, 1778, Stiles married his second wife, Abigail Gobill, at the First Presbyterian Church in Morristown, New Jersey. Ebenezer Stiles died in Morris Plains, New Jersey, on November 22, 1814, and is buried in the graveyard at the First Presbyterian Church in Morristown, New Jersey. Moses Stiles, the son of Ebenezer Stiles and his wife, Polly, was born in Morristown, New Jersey, on April 2, 1771. He made his living as a farmer and clockmaker, and lived in Hanover Township, New Jersey. He was married to Hannah Weaver until they separated in 1825; they parted ways because Hannah’s husband, Henry Weaver, was found to be still alive at the time Stiles had married her. Moses Stiles and Hannah Weaver had five children together: Maria, John, William, Sally, and Ebenezer. On November 22, 1825, Stiles married Sarah Allen in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. They had two children, Sarah Jane (b. 1830), and Mary (d. 1845). Moses Stiles died in Morris Plains, New Jersey, on August 22, 1854. The papers include land deeds, land survey maps, bonds, and other documents belonging to Ebenezer Stiles, Moses Stiles, as well as other relatives, including David Cooper, the Viel Family, and Jonas Phillips.
