Historical Note

The city of Paterson was founded by Alexander Hamilton in 1781 as the nation’s first planned industrial city. Paterson was a center of textile manufacturing, and became known as the “Silk City.” After a devastating fire in 1902, the city rebuilt the downtown with massive Beaux Arts-style buildings, many of which have retained their character. The Hotel Alexander Hamilton, a 210-room building located on 55 Church Street in downtown Paterson, opened in 1925 during the heyday of Paterson’s prosperity. It once featured opulent ballrooms and provided accomodations for many prominent individuals. In the following decades, as Paterson declined, the hotel fell into disrepair. There are currently plans to convert the structure into an assisted-living facility for seniors.
