Hines was an attorney who practiced law in Newark, New Jersey. He graduated from Public High School in Newark, New Jersey in 1874. Hines then was licensed to practice law in New Jersey in 1883, and became a Master in Chancery in New Jersey in 1884. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteThis collection consists of the personal documents belonging to Henry C. Hines and John H. Hines. Included in the papers is Henry C. Hines’s high school diploma, his license to practice law issued by the State of New Jersey, as well as a passport issued by the U.S. Department of State in 1894 for John H. Hines (b. ca. 1834). In addition to these personal documents, there is also correspondence from the U.S. Attorney General Charles Devens, dated June 2, 1880, addressed to the U.S. Attorney in Newark, New Jersey. The letter authorized the U.S. Attorney in Newark to appeal the case, U.S. v. Seth B. Ryder, et al, to the U.S. Supreme Court. There is also a document dated May 20, 1738, signed by John Lamprey and Samuel Lane, which set forth the code of conduct for an unidentified society.
