Walton enlisted as a Private on June 3, 1861, becoming a member of the “H” Company of the New Jersey 1st Infantry. There he served first as a Corporal, then as a Sergeant, and finally as a 1st Sergeant, until he was discharged at Trenton, New Jersey on June 23, 1864. Peter D. Vroom, prominent New Jersey lawyer and politician, enlisted as an Adjutant in August 1862. Later that year he was commissioned into Field & Staff of the New Jersey 1st Infantry; he was discharged for promotion on August 28, 1863. He continued to serve in the Field & Staff of the New Jersey 2nd Cavalry until October 1865. Scope and Content NoteThe affidavit records the statements made by Pierson M. Walton on April 1, 1863, in which he states that certain equipment under the command of Captain Edward F. Roberts was worn out during service. The affidavit was sworn before Peter D. Vroom and signed by both parties.
