Biographical Note

The authorship of this diary is unknown. The volume, however, does contain a sheet from the prescription pad of A. Leslie Gibbins, M.D. with an address for an office in Newark, New Jersey. The entries in the diary document a doctor’s practice, which include both office appointments and home visits, as well as personal expenses and social activities. The brief personal entries in the diary provide some evidence that the physician was a woman. In particular, entries that list the purchase of items such as dresses, hats, slips, and a housecoat seem to indicate that the diary documents the practice of a woman doctor in Newark during the 1930s.
