Historical Note

On Tuesday, September 11, 2001 at 8:48 a.m., terrorists linked to Osama bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda network crashed the first hijacked airliner into One World Trade Center in New York City. At first, it was thought that a small tourist plane had veered off course and accidentally collided with the North Tower. Eighteen minutes later, a second jetliner crashed into Two World Trade Center. At this point, it became clear that they were carefully coordinated attacks on innocent civilians.

At 9:40 a.m., another jet crashed into the western part of the Pentagon. A few minutes later, Two World Trade Center collapsed. By 10:30 a.m., the other tower had followed its twin in falling to the ground. Later that morning, a flight from Newark, New Jersey to San Francisco crashed in an empty field near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in what was a failed hijack attempt that was to have targeted possibly the White House or the Capitol in Washington, DC.

The total number of those who perished was later confirmed at approximately 2,800, which included the people who died on the jetliners, as well as the firefighters, police officers, and paramedics who attempted to rescue the many civilians working in the World Trade Center complex. Additionally, 85 personnel were killed in the Pentagon attack, and all passengers aboard United Flight 93 to San Francisco perished in the crash.

In the weeks following the attacks, many people throughout the nation, and especially in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area, and in the vicinity of the nation’s capital held candlelight vigils, memorial services, and religious ceremonies, and many makeshift memorials appeared all over the country. With the public so deeply affected by the tragedy, memorial services were held throughout the nation on the first anniversary of the attacks, so that those who died were remembered and honored.

Acquisition Information

In collaboration with the New Jersey Historical Commission and New Jersey Network, The New Jersey Historical Society administered the Changed Lives project to record and preserve New Jersey’s response to the events of September 11th. This project collected stories and objects that demonstrated the impact of the events upon the lives of New Jerseyans, many of which are now included in this manuscript collection and the Historical Society’s museum collection. Some of the material was used for the exhibition Changed Lives: New Jersey Remembers September 11, 2001, which was on display from Sept. 11 through Dec. 7, 2002.

This project was generously funded in part by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the Charles Emil Thenen Foundation, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, and the New Jersey Historical Commission.

The items in this collection were donated by various municipalities, schools, libraries, businesses and private citizens throughout New Jersey for The New Jersey Historical Society’s 2002 exhibition, “Changed Lives: New Jersey Remembers September 11, 2001,” which focused on how New Jersey’s citizens responded to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and in western Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001. This collection is an artificial collection that has remained open. Even after the closing of the exhibition, materials continue to be donated and added to the collection. Additions to the collection are arranged in their own series and filed at the end of the collection.

Processing Information

There are four newspapers/newsletters within this collection that should be handled with extreme care due to their brittle nature. One of the newspapers has significant tearing among several of its pages. While most of the posters are printed on cardboard, and therefore reinforced, there are a few posters that are handwritten on thin paper, and like the newspapers, should be handled with care. Finally, in the first box in this collection, there are several loose items of ephemera not contained within folders (due to either their bulk or size), yet are housed within the box itself. These items should be carefully restored to the box is the similar positions in which they were stored to ensure the safety of both the loose items, as well as the documents contained within folders.

This series consists of printed and or published materials reflecting events and changes taking place in the aftermath of 9/11. It is arranged into four subseries:

Subseries A: Periodicals, 2001-2002 (in ledger sized box)

Scope and Content:

Included in this subseries are newspaper and periodical clippings from sources such as The New York Times, the Newark Star-Ledger, the Princeton Times, Time magazine, as well as Newsweek and other national and local publications, and are arranged alphabetically by periodical. The news articles range from the reports of the terrorist attacks and their immediate aftermath to stories about how the tragedy affected individuals, families, friends, and communities throughout the state. NJHS also possesses complete issues of the Newark Star Ledger from September 11th through October 11th 2001 (October 6th is missing).

A notable inclusion is an information packet from the New Jersey Family Assistance Center in Jersey City, New Jersey. In this packet is the paperwork that families of the missing, and later deceased victims used, as a guide in recovering the remains of loved ones who died at the World Trade Center.

Series 2: Personal Reactions to 9/11, 2001-2002

Scope and Content:

This series consists of poetry, essays, prayers, songs, electronic communications and and other literature expressing the emotions felt by people throughout the state. Included is an essay and poem written by high school student Jessica Fox, who lost her father in the attacks on the World Trade Center. In addition, many citizens throughout the state wrote and provided their personal narratives recounting their experiences on September 11, 2001. These narratives range from an account by firefighter Charles T. Smith of the Jersey City Fire Department, who was directly involved in the rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site, to Bob Taylor of Aon Corporation in New Jersey, who, as he sat in his office, thought of and worried about the safety of his colleagues that he worked with at the World Trade Center.

Scope and Content:

Contains photographs that were obtained from New Jersey residents, which are mainly images of the attacks on the World Trade Center and memorials for the victims, with locations ranging from New York to Jersey City, to Verona. The photographs are mostly arranged chronologically, and cover the years 2001-2002. Included in this series is a collection of photographs taken by the NJ-TFI / U.S. Army Recovery Effort at the World Trade Center site in Fall 2001.

Series 5: Oversized Materials, 2001-2002

Scope and Content:

Consists of all the oversized items in this collection. The bulk of this series contains large survey maps of the World Trade Center site, as well as aerial photographs of the World Trade Center complex. Also in this series are school projects and posters from schools in Rutherford, New Jersey, and in Newark, New Jersey. Completing the collection are post-September 11th public safety posters from New Jersey Transit, as well as a poster from PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson) honoring the Port Authority Police officers who perished in the collapse of the World Trade Center.
