Scope and Content Note

This collection contains a two-page composition written ca. 1913 by Florentine E. Kearney about Christopher Columbus. The essay focuses on his voyages to the West in search of Asia and his ultimate discovery of America. Additionally, the essay alludes to the ethnic tensions in Newark during this time period. Kearney writes: “if we see an Italian roaming through our streets we look upon him in scorn and think they haven’t any right in our country. But if it were not for one of their fellow country-men, this continent might have never been discovered.”

The collection also contains a photograph of a home in Newark, most likely the home of Florentine Kearney.
