Biographical NoteThis collection contains World War II era material about Ethyl Hoffman Guthrie and her husband John E. H. Guthrie. She is referred to as Ethyl Hoffman through her military records. Ms. Hoffman was part of the WAAC (Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps) during World War II and lived in Irvington, NJ. She enlisted on August 4, 1943 and was activated for active duty August 23 1943. She completed her training at Ft. Des Moines in Iowa. She then served overseas as a member of WAAC from January 1, 1944 until June 11, 1945. While overseas, she served as a switchboard operator where she earned various service medals including 3 Bronze Service Stars and a WAAC Service Medal. She also participated in numerous battles and campaigns for the Allies, including Naples Foggia, North Aapennines and Rome Arno. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry, John E. H.Guthrie served as a dentist in the Newark area. He became a member of the New Jersey Board of Health in 1938. He also received many accolades from the city of Newark for his service as at the Newark City Hospital. In 1937, he was inducted as a member of the National Guard. He also was part of the U.S. war effort by participating in Selective Service from 1940-1944. During that time, he earned various honors from the President for his duty for Selective Service. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteThis collection consists of various materials from the World War II era including many WAAC related military documents, newspaper clippings, event programs, and correspondence from overseas, inlcuding postcards, Christmas cards and V-Mail. There are photographs of Ethyl Hoffman in military uniform. There are also medical records for Augusta Hoffman (Ethyl’s mother) from after the war. In addition to the documents pertaining to Ethyl Hoffman, there are various documents pertaining to her husband John Guthrie and his service as a dentist. There are certificates of completion for Army Extension Courses. There is also a small amount of military correspondence pertaining to John Guthrie and a physical exam report. There are certificates and membership cards from the New Jersey Department of Health, Selective Service and Newark City Hospital (including a folder of oversized certificates and diplomas).
