- Native of Westfield; Cartoonist;
Wrote over 1300 cartoons especially for The New Yorker, but also for Collier’s, and
TV Guide; is best remembered for creating The Addams Family, first
in 1937 as a comic strip, and later as a television show that ran from 1964-1966.

Alampi, Philip [1912-1992]
- The NJ State Secretary of Agriculture
for 26 years (1956-1982); suggested the term “Garden State” be
emblazoned on all license plates; proposed the Nation’s first Farmland
Assessment Act in 1963; initiated the 1973 “Report on the Blueprint
Commission on the Future of New Jersey Agriculture” ,which set the
principles for farmland preservation; prevented residential-commercial
development of the Rutgers-Cook College Campus.

Abner “Longy” [ -1959]
- Mobster
and bootlegger; reputed to be the most powerful organized crime figure in
New Jersey; known for his Hollywood connections; His power base was centered
in Newark’s Third Ward Political Club. In 1948 he supported Menachem
Begin’s Irgun movement during the Israeli War for Independence. His death
in 1959 was ruled a suicide even though he was found hanging in the basement
of his East Orange home with his hands tied behind his back.
