Land transactions and estate papers pertaining to Allentown and Upper Freehold Township, where Middleton was a tanner and a notary public.
George Middleton (1800-1888) of Allentown (Monmouth County), New Jersey was a tanner, notary public, judge of the New
Jersey Chancery Court and the Monmouth County Orphan Court, and a U. S. Congressman from 1863-1865. He married to Margaretta S(tewart?) (d. 1887), with whom he had at least three children: Lucilla, Deborah (Hause), and Mary J.
(Thomas).
In 1887, Middletons daughter, Mary J. Thomas, and her husband brought suit against him, and his possessions were sold
at sheriffs auction. After his death in 1881, George Middleton was interred in Crosswicks Community Cemetery, Crosswicks (Burlington County), New Jersey. George Middletons brother-in law, Jonathan Steward, and his son-in-law, John D. Thomas, acted as the administrators of his estate.

The source of this collection is unknown.
This collection, dating from 1739-1896, consists primarily of documents that George Middleton notarized, administered,
or collected. These documents have been arranged by record type: wills and estate records, legal documents, indentures, and miscellaneous documents. The wills and estate records involve the property of twenty-three individuals,
as well as two wills of George Middleton himself. The largest number of these documents pertains to the estates of Charles Robbins and Samuel Robinson.
The legal documents in this collection include court documents from the Monmouth County Orphan Court, court transcripts, judgments, and papers regarding the founding of Crosswicks Cemetery at the Presbyterian Church of Allentown.
The property documents include maps, surveys, leases, bonds, indentures and deeds. The indentures and deeds are for
property transactions in Monmouth, Mercer, and Burlington Counties in New Jersey, and roughly date from 1800-1880. They involve members of the Imlay, Stout, Bunting, Tantum, Vanderbeek, De Bow, and Bruere Families.
The last group pf documents are miscellaneous in nature and consist of an undated copy of 1726 census of West New Jersey, insurance document regarding Sarah Smith Stafford, and a petition of residents of Upper Freehold Township.
